Understand Sheens

Before choosing your paint color, it’s a good idea to know about the different sheens that are available. Then we can get into the tips for choosing a color.

Below you’ll find a few general guidelines to help you select the right sheen for your walls..

  • Flat – This is also called matte. It doesn’t have any shine. It’s perfect to use in the areas with lot traffic such as bedrooms and living rooms along with ceilings.
  • Flat Enamel. = This has very little shine but it’s a little simpler to clean than matte. This is also ideal for the areas of low traffic. However, if you have pets or kids, it might be the better choice.
  • Eggshell Enamel – This has a little shine and is good for the areas like your living room. The majority of scuffs are easy to wipe off with just a dampened cloth.
  • Satin Enamel – This has a little more shine to it and will work well in areas with moisture. It’s very wipeable so it’s great for bathrooms and kitchens.

Now that we know the types of sheen that should be used for your rooms, let’s look at some tips for choosing a color.

Consider the Room’s Mood

The first thing you want to do is to consider the mood you want the room to have. For example, if you’re painting a bedroom and you want it to be relaxing, colors such as cool greys, lavender and blues will be your best choices. Reds and browns aren’t going to be the best choices for a bedroom if you want it to be relaxing. If you forget about the mood that you want to create it can have disastrous results.

Beware of All or Nothing

The last thing you want is to have a room that’s all bright colors or all neutral. If your furniture is more neutral, then you want to choose a brighter color for your walls. However, if your furniture is brighter, then you want to choose a paint that is more neutral. This will give your room a vibe that looks effortlessly put-together.

Pay Attention to the Natural Light the Room Gets

This is going to be a key player when it comes to your room’s overall look. If there’s ample natural light that is coming into the room, you will have a bigger color variety from which to choose. However, if it doesn’t get a lot of natural light, you want to choose a color that is lighter so that it isn’t looking very dramatic and that the room doesn’t look like it’s closed in.

Check the Paint at Home

One of the best things that you can do is to check the paint in your home. even though a color might look awesome when you’re in a store, it might not look the right way when it is in the house. It’s a good idea to get samples from the store when you have a few shades that you want to try. Then paint several little sections on your desired wall so that you can see the way that they look. Look at them in different lights and take a couple of days so that you can really get a true sense of the shades. But always make sure that you’re testing the paints at home so you know how they are going to look.

Don’t Put Samples Beside Each Other

Going along with checking the paint at home, don’t put your samples beside one another on the walls. They are going to distract you and one another, making it more difficult to make the right choice.

It’s a good idea to paint a piece of paper so that you can move it when needed to see how it looks on the different walls in your house and during various times during the day.
