If you live in an apartment, that doesn’t mean that you can’t have a garden. There are some types of produce that do very well growing in pots. We’ll look at them below to help you get started.

Herbs – Even though a lot of herbs will do well when grown in containers, they’re not going to get as bushy and large as when they’re grown outside. You also might need to replace the plants if you’re harvesting frequently. However, it’s a great idea to do it so that you have fresh herbs nearby for cooking. Some of the best herbs for growing in your apartment are:

  • Basil
  • Chives
  • Lavender
  • Mint
  • Parsley
  • Thyme

Salad Greens – Favorites for salads such as arugula, lettuce and spinach are plants with shallow roots and grow fast. They aren’t very fussy about growing conditions, either, if you give them lots of water.

Tomatoes – These plants often grow heavy and large. However, they will do well when grown in pots. They’re going to grow best when you place them in containers a minimum of 30’ around. However, you can grow some patio varieties in hanging baskets.

Chili Peppers: Do you like h eat? The good news is that hot peppers will grow great in pots. They can give you yields throughout the year. Sweet peppers are also something to try. However, hot peppers usually do better.

Meyer Lemons – If you like citrus, you can try growing a dwarf citrus tree indoors. An example would be Meyer lemons. These do well inside if you give them 6-8 hours of sunshine daily, as well as some humidity. Make sure you put something under your pot so that your furniture and floors are protected, since it will give off sticky sap.

Strawberries – These will make your apartment look pretty and give you fruit. Double bonus. Simply make sure they’re getting a minimum of 6 hours of sunshine daily and make sure their soil is consistently moist (though not soggy) so that you get great fruit.

These are six types of things that you can grow in your apartment. Just make sure that you are protecting your floors and carpet because some things, like the Meyer lemons, can make a huge mess. The last thing that you want is to have problems with your landlord because you wanted to grow fresh produce in your apartment.  Before you grow plants in your apartment, too, make sure that there’s nothing in your lease against it or ask your landlord.
