Recently we had a post about the different types of produce that you can grow easily in your apartment. Now that you know of some of the things that you can grow in your apartment, we’ll go over some of the tips that you can use to make sure that your garden gets the best care.

Watering – Obviously, this is one of the most essential tasks that you can do fo your apartment garden. Even if the garden gets exposed to the rain, such as if you have it on your balcony or patio, it likely isn’t going to be the water it needs. When the soil is in a container, it is going to dry out very quickly, particularly as the plants grow. You can test your soil by poking a finger 1-2 inches below its surface. If the soil feels like it’s dry, it’s time to water the plant.

Feeding – This is something that you’ll need to do on regularly, according to your plant’s individual needs. A fertilizer that is water-soluble that you can add when you’re watering is generally going to be the easiest choice. You should also note whether the potting mix you’re using has some fertilizer in it already, since this will usually delay the necessity to feed the plants.

Problems – Diseases and pests are something that you have to be aware of even if your plants are indoors. There aren’t any natural predators when you are growing inside, so insects don’t have to worry about them. Therefore, you are going to have more issues with insects in your indoor garden. If you are spotting signs of disease or pests, like holes in your plants’ leaves or discoloring, you should move the plant so that it’s far from your other plants until the problem’s fixed.

Harvesting – Make sure that you learn when the plants are at their harvesting peak. That’s when you should pick the fruits or vegetables. Sometimes, harvesting will actually promote your plants to produce more food for you to enjoy.

These are just four tips that you can use to help make sure that your indoor garden is flourishing and that you are having a lot of delicious produce to enjoy.  We’ll be continuing our apartment gardening series by talking about the different types of containers that you can use.
